Step into Merle’s Closet for an insider’s view of the inner world of L.A. style.
FOUR-time Oscar nominated costume designer Arianne Phillips (A Complete Unknown, Walk the Line, W.E., Once Upon a Time In Hollywood) woke up to her fourth nom on Jan. 23; she’d already scored a BAFTA nom for her work in the Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown. But weeks before this, ASU’s FIDM fashion school then honored her with costume exhibit at their downtown HQ, with many of Timothee Chalamet, Monica Barbaro and Elle Fanning’s looks right there to touch and feel. “I grew up in the West Village,” Philips, an old pal (and former Madonna stylist), told me. “I grew up with Bob Dylan. What people don’t know is that he actually was a style icon. He never wore shoes – only boots – now true of many guys. After he met The Beatles in 1964, he amped up his game with more mod swagger. I think he influenced Bob generation of male dressing. HERE COMES THE FUZZ
L.A.`s perennial fashion trend: layering - went full frontal at this weekend`s Pickwick Vintage Fair: chill weather vintage coat`s ruled, though most were far from chill. Fuzzy: faux fur, chubby`s, woolly bullies, animal prints: the coat is the thing right now. So are popcorn knits from the 70`s - the fluffier the better. Suede and leather were standouts for sale: leather looks in lipstick red, fluorescent lime, butter yellow - and suede jackets, fringed or plain fun, in every shade of 70`s brown: cigar, burnt umber, chestnut, smoky topaz - and of course, this year`s new/old hue: mocha mousse. Yet Taylor Swift`s sartorial presence has added another dimension: Kansas City Chief`s games are now non-stop red carpet runway, where we get to see the world`s biggest (richest) pop star dressing up - and dressing down - for her biggest audience of all time. Two hundred million people catch the Super Bowl.

ANGELS IN WEHO????
We know about Angels in America. But till this pre-Thanksgiving sighting, we had no idea angels roam the streets of WeHo. Driving down Santa Monica Boulevard on a chilly Sunday, we spotted a shirtless youth with longish hair strutting, sans shirt – with only giant fluffy white angel wings fluttering from his shoulders for protection. When ask why, he smiled ear to ear: “I think we’re needed more than ever right now.” We can’t argue with that. Holiday, the brand`s most coveted season, is famed for its chunky faux furs and sequin bodycon slinks. Among the high profile guests: Bananarama /Shakespeare`s sister singer Siobhan Fahey, the GoGo`s Charlotte Caffey, Michelle Laurita and Thomas Drotar. Sweater weather has finally landed at the Pickwick Vintage Fair. Just give these antique clothes devotees a little drop in degrees - out come the boots, suede jackets, tights, faux furs, leathers, plaids. Layering`s a distinctly L.A. obsession - particularly here, when, given the chance, L.A.`s sartorial stalwarts pile onfringe, feathers and funky footwear. Duly noted: fashionista shoppers like designer Trina Turk, designer/stylist Jeannine Braden and dresser par excellence, Judy Jimenez.
This past Saturday we returned to The Row for the always exciting Pickwick Vintage. This time we concentrated on the Vendors and asked them how they find such treasures. At the at least decade long annual event, the cocktail party for the MaxMara "Face of the Future" - this year awarded to Joey King - we noticed something seriously cool: the retro elevator to the first floor garden where it`s held, has long curtains tied at the sides in front of it - and a small round mirror behind it. It looks like a Vermeer and van Eyck reference, don`t they? "Girl With the Pearl Earring" and "The Arnolfini" - or what? And appropriately, there were a lot of pearl earrings headed up to the event, produced by David Rodgers Inc.

Constant small talk, obtaining quotes (for coverage) – and a degree of formality that comes with being “on,” can take a toll - physically, mentally, socially.
Which is why the mid October opening of the new Beverly Drive ALC store – the third L.A. locale from founder/designer and L.A. homegirl and former stylist Andrea Lieberman (Pacific Palisades, Malibu – plus Soho, the Upper East Side and Hamptons in NY) was so – warm and fuzzy? Yes.

For spring/summer 2025, former J. Crew designer Todd Snyder, now the purveyor of two Los Angeles stores - The Grove and Abbot Kinney - went softer, flowier, prettier, pinker, peacher and sky-blue-er than his tweedy fall fare. In classic mens` club spot Le Rock at Rockefeller Center - an uptown eatery for well-heeled martini culture - showed soft suits, soft layers and shorts suits that push the envelope of menswear. For spring 2025, Todd Snyder – never one for conventional shows or conventional clothes – presented his menswear collection late afternoon at the Art Deco Stylist boite Le Rock at 45 Rockefeller Plaza on Sunday September 8.
Assembled in all their pastel glory in an empty floor upstairs, the guys in varied trench coat, shorts suit, satin jacket, baggy white linens looks, showed off slouchy silhouettes – one soft suit in a three piece wood rose hue – vogueing it up for the shutterbugs, under the steady gaze of Snyder himself, he and his tailors checking fits and stylish designer flip flops before the male entourage wound its way through Le Rock’s tables, like a style army staking out the best oysters and martinis the city has to offer.

Once you get sucked into a Pickwick Vintage Show addiction, you can jones for a full four weeks till the next chance at 70’s boho dresses, suede jackets, luxe label handbags, costume and fine jewelry, vintage Dior and Gucci sunglasses galore. But vintage lord Richard Wainwright has now popped up Pickwick at Platform in Culver City on a monthly basis, too. If there’s one thing more unique, joyous, iconoclastic and excellently eccentric than the adorable Brooklyn design duo Tanner Fletcher - Tanner Richie and Fletcher Kasell - is their buoyantly flamboyant - and rabid - crowd of (mostly young) fans and followers who practically vogued their way down west 26th St. on the way to their spring/summer show. Were they getting stopped to pose for their one-of-a-kind mash-up outfits - or were they fashion editors, layered up, posing as downtown boho`s? "I like to look at the collection and have it look like somebody`s closet,” Kasell explained as he and Richie greeted the TF faithful as they entered the multi room tableau theater, where actual models acted out the clothes. "There`s everyday stuff that`s easy to wear, but at the same time it`s fashion." Nothing every day about this cabal.
