Max Mara | JOEY KING

Any event the Chateau Marmont gets imbued with instant louche – the lighting, the lamps, the furniture – it’s instant “boudoir,” in the most sophisticated sense. The MaxMara “Face of the Future” party benefits  from this every year, when they honor a young female star they see big potential for (and they’re usually right) and want to dress before they get there and get grabbed by another brand. It’s been held at the Chateau for at least a decade. I was there for Rose Byrne’s turn in 2014, and tons of others: for Kate Mara, Natalie Dormer, Zoey Deutch, Elizabeth Banks and Lili Reinhart.

The format’s the same: MaxMara dresses their “face” as they did Joey King this week – there’s a procession of cute girls pouring in, the more well known and well-dressed ones like Mia Morretti and “Nobody Wants This” star Justine Lupe, are obviously dressed by the brand, fashion influencers in barely there dresses and agents and media types. Then they file up to the beautifully lit garden and imbibe in low calorie cocktails and take selfies. We did notice one thing I’ve never picked up on before: the curtain hung in front of the retro elevator, with the mirror behind it, is a take of a Vermeer painting  “Girl With the Pearl Earring” and the mirror right out of the  Jan van Eyck’s “The Arnolfini” portrait. We love our art references on the way in to a cocktail party.
