It was my pleased-as-punch pleasure to guest host the First Annual OSC-Or’s party at my home-away-from-home, Weho’s divinely-decadently-decorated Or Bar – where me and my laptop swill down Rishi Chai latte every weekday. Co-owners Rob Novinger, Stevie Schestag, manager Darren Kendrick and dj Jason Wimberly held down the fort, while I welcomed guests, regulars and friends to the Art Deco styled coffee/boozy lounge.
With its sexy curvy overhead chandelier and black, gold and silver decor, it’s the perfect spot to watch Hollywood indulge in its fetting of gold statuettes. Of course, Or denizens dressed appropriately, mostly in gold, black and silver – with a touch of fun faux fur. Prizes were handed out to winners of Or Bar best dressed, Oscar betting and movie song bingo.

ANGELS IN WEHO????
We know about Angels in America. But till this pre-Thanksgiving sighting, we had no idea angels roam the streets of WeHo. Driving down Santa Monica Boulevard on a chilly Sunday, we spotted a shirtless youth with longish hair strutting, sans shirt – with only giant fluffy white angel wings fluttering from his shoulders for protection. When ask why, he smiled ear to ear: “I think we’re needed more than ever right now.” We can’t argue with that. What better place to host a holiday season/Christmas/Hannukah shopping party than a boutique named Church? Shopping is a religion at Rodney Burns` and David Mulvaney`s emporium of eclectic eccentric furnishings, art and fashion from far-flung tk. They served vino and chocolate fondue to rabid LeSuperbe shoppers, the L.A. brand designed by this town`s fashion fixture Jeannine Braden. Holiday, the brand`s most coveted season, is famed for its chunky faux furs and sequin bodycon slinks. Among the high profile guests: Bananarama /Shakespeare`s sister singer Siobhan Fahey, the GoGo`s Charlotte Caffey, Michelle Laurita and Thomas Drotar. Sweater weather has finally landed at the Pickwick Vintage Fair. Just give these antique clothes devotees a little drop in degrees - out come the boots, suede jackets, tights, faux furs, leathers, plaids. Layering`s a distinctly L.A. obsession - particularly here, when, given the chance, L.A.`s sartorial stalwarts pile onfringe, feathers and funky footwear. Duly noted: fashionista shoppers like designer Trina Turk, designer/stylist Jeannine Braden and dresser par excellence, Judy Jimenez.
This past Saturday we returned to The Row for the always exciting Pickwick Vintage. This time we concentrated on the Vendors and asked them how they find such treasures. At the at least decade long annual event, the cocktail party for the MaxMara "Face of the Future" - this year awarded to Joey King - we noticed something seriously cool: the retro elevator to the first floor garden where it`s held, has long curtains tied at the sides in front of it - and a small round mirror behind it. It looks like a Vermeer and van Eyck reference, don`t they? "Girl With the Pearl Earring" and "The Arnolfini" - or what? And appropriately, there were a lot of pearl earrings headed up to the event, produced by David Rodgers Inc.

Everyone thinks fashion events: upscale store openings and dinners and the like, with editors, designers, stylists and requisite celebs are so glamourous. Problem is – they are. But along with that tasteful turf: the pressure of what to wear - dressing in the style of the designer/brand? Or is that trying too hard? Constant small talk, obtaining quotes (for coverage) – and a degree of formality that comes with being “on,” can take a toll - physically, mentally, socially.
Which is why the mid October opening of the new Beverly Drive ALC store – the third L.A. locale from founder/designer and L.A. homegirl and former stylist Andrea Lieberman (Pacific Palisades, Malibu – plus Soho, the Upper East Side and Hamptons in NY) was so – warm and fuzzy? Yes.

For spring/summer 2025, former J. Crew designer Todd Snyder, now the purveyor of two Los Angeles stores - The Grove and Abbot Kinney - went softer, flowier, prettier, pinker, peacher and sky-blue-er than his tweedy fall fare. In classic mens` club spot Le Rock at Rockefeller Center - an uptown eatery for well-heeled martini culture - showed soft suits, soft layers and shorts suits that push the envelope of menswear. For spring 2025, Todd Snyder – never one for conventional shows or conventional clothes – presented his menswear collection late afternoon at the Art Deco Stylist boite Le Rock at 45 Rockefeller Plaza on Sunday September 8.
Assembled in all their pastel glory in an empty floor upstairs, the guys in varied trench coat, shorts suit, satin jacket, baggy white linens looks, showed off slouchy silhouettes – one soft suit in a three piece wood rose hue – vogueing it up for the shutterbugs, under the steady gaze of Snyder himself, he and his tailors checking fits and stylish designer flip flops before the male entourage wound its way through Le Rock’s tables, like a style army staking out the best oysters and martinis the city has to offer.

Once you get sucked into a Pickwick Vintage Show addiction, you can jones for a full four weeks till the next chance at 70’s boho dresses, suede jackets, luxe label handbags, costume and fine jewelry, vintage Dior and Gucci sunglasses galore. But vintage lord Richard Wainwright has now popped up Pickwick at Platform in Culver City on a monthly basis, too. Many of the same great vendors are there: Via Davia Vintage, Trustfund 01 – plus some killer fine jewelry dealers, laden with signet rings, jade and ruby bangles and crystal bracelets. If there’s one thing more unique, joyous, iconoclastic and excellently eccentric than the adorable Brooklyn design duo Tanner Fletcher - Tanner Richie and Fletcher Kasell - is their buoyantly flamboyant - and rabid - crowd of (mostly young) fans and followers who practically vogued their way down west 26th St. on the way to their spring/summer show. Were they getting stopped to pose for their one-of-a-kind mash-up outfits - or were they fashion editors, layered up, posing as downtown boho`s? "I like to look at the collection and have it look like somebody`s closet,” Kasell explained as he and Richie greeted the TF faithful as they entered the multi room tableau theater, where actual models acted out the clothes. "There`s everyday stuff that`s easy to wear, but at the same time it`s fashion." Nothing every day about this cabal.

Jonathan Cohen`s spring/summer is a real mishmash - in the best of all ways. Like famed fabric/print mixer-uppers before him (Betsey Johnson, Dries van Noten). One pink and blue tie dye sweater paired with a black and white print skirt says it all. Shapes are mishmashed too: strapless peplum mini dresses over loose pants, a red floral dress over a different hue-d midi skirt, over pants. All this layering might sound like a pile up, but it actually works - in a similar way to Marc Jacobs`s famed grunge collection. Call it "wunge" - whimisical grunge.

NANUSHKA
I`d never heard of label Nanushka, or its Hungarian designer Sandra Sandor, till I got an invite for this downtown runway show. Her lyrical collection was a lovely surprise: super wearable, cool but easy, flattering clothes made from uniquely textured fabrics - like a butter colored three tier fringe midi skirt paired with a simple black blazer. Business on the top, party on the bottom. Somehow this Budapest native created interesting clothes whose ideas (and there are plenty) don`t overwhelm their ease and attractiveness. Turns out, she and her husband also have four stores (NY, Budapest, London, Shanghai) with their own cafes. Please - can L.A. be next?
