RACE TO ERASE MS

EXIT WALK FOR L’AGENCE

Nancy Davis has been producing her Race to Erase MS charity for thirty one years - always with a dolled up crowd, peppy fashion show and entertainment - but morever, the many millions she's raised are on their way, with medical research, to eradicating the dreaded disease. This year's included a runway events by sponsor L'Agence and singer Nastasha Bedingfield.

ADDED BONUS: We will be releasing TODAY our capture book of this event including photos of those dressed to the 9’s, the stunning L’Agence fashion show including the exit walk, and insightful fashion coverage from Merle’s Closet.

Catching up with artist Chuck Arnoldi this past week was a real pleasure. Not only is he an extremely talented painter/sculptor and designer, but Chuck's a walking history book of Southern Californian culture dating back to the 60's. Maybe the best thing about wearing vintage - and there are many: those great prices, harkening back to cooler eras, a way of showing a penchant for individual style (no one will have what you're wearing), the joy of sifting through a quarry to find what speaks to you - is the story behind the piece. Yes, fashion as storytelling. What you're wearing is suddenly a conversation piece: its era, its provenance, how you chose to style it. There are beaucoup de conversations at the monthly Pickwick Vintage Show at The Row DTLA: its 70 plus vendors and their loyal flocks don't do costume party. They do them - splendiferously. Singularly. I used to think vintage chicks, vintage chic, were camp - even kitsch. Shopping Pickwick a couple times, I now see them - us - as full-fledged epicureans.

You always know a soiree at Maxfield on Melrose is going to be a visual feast. Designer Willy Chavarria, fave of Billie
Eilish, had his spring/summer collection debut at Maxfield, which brought out muse, rapper YG, in head to toe Willy wear - including silver gloves - lots of Willy wannabe's - and a full gamut of thrifters, goths, leather lovers and neo-punks who spend big bucks to look rebellious. It was my pleased-as-punch pleasure to guest host the First Annual OSC-Or's party at my home-away-from-home, Weho's divinely-decadently-decorated Or Bar. Co-owners Rob Novinger, Stevie Schestag, mgr Darren Kendrick and dj Jason Wimberly held down the fort; I welcomed guests to the Art Deco styled lounge. Of course, Or denizens dressed appropriately.

HOLLYWOOD FRAGRANCE
What does Hollywood smell like? Some might say green grass (both kinds). But now there are twin fragrances claiming to bottle Hollywood:
Hollywood Sunrise and Hollywood Sunset, created for the Hollywood sign's 100th birthday. What??? it doesn't look a day over 50!
Therelease party brought out a well dressed, well tressed and sweet-smelling crowd. Let's face it, the smell of Hollywood is
indeed green: money.

Art Deco Society Los Angeles

Art deco architecture abounds in our fair city - as do fashion shows, of late. But it took The Art Deco Society of L.A. - which supports
preservation, Deco walks, holds dress up balls- to bring them together. An Art Deco fashion show, held in that most beauteous of
L.A. Deco temples, Bullock's Wilshire (now Southwestern Law School), included costumes from famed films worn by appropriately marcel

The fourth annual Frieze Los Angeles blew into town - more specifically, Santa Monica's Barker Hangar - on Thursday Feb 29, housing eclectic art work from over 95 international galleries. Born in London in 2003 out of the 1993 British art magazine of the same name, Frieze LA opened on the Paramount Lot in 1999, instantly becoming the cultural/social event of the season. Thursday night's excitement had local culture collectors whipped up into an anything-but-chill frenzy, extending their costumes - a word I use to describe these sartorial choices because aesthetics aren't just an outside job: they start in your gut and work their way out. We spotted lots of walking works of art at Frieze - heating up the big tent into a kind of cultural circus.

The fourth annual Frieze Los Angeles blew into town - more specifically, Santa Monica's Barker Hangar - on Thursday Feb 29, housing eclectic art work from over 95 international galleries. Born in London in 2003 out of the 1993 British art magazine of the same name, Frieze LA opened on the Paramount Lot in 1999, instantly becoming the cultural/social event of the season. Thursday night's excitement had local culture collectors whipped up into an anything-but-chill frenzy, extending their costumes - a word I use to describe these sartorial choices because aesthetics aren't just an outside job: they start in your gut and work their way out. We spotted lots of walking works of art at Frieze - heating up the big tent into a kind of cultural circus.

Bella Bella Bella! An awards season fete for the video release of “Poor Things” at the Wilshire Ebell showed off the film’s fantasy Victorian goth in an atmosphere bedecked with ‘baby Bellas’: small pale models in long black wigs, puffed sleeves, ruffle tops, wide shorts, boots (a la Emma Stone), dancing against a background of Holly Waddington’s award winning costumes on mannequins. Selfie stylistas in this Insta-influenced crowd created their own wildly inventive would-be Bella’s.

THIS PAST SATURDAY: It’s hard to believe I was a Pickwick Vintage virgin till recently. Busting my Pickwick cherry, I’m already an addict. The big baby of Big Daddy vintage king Richard Wainwright is no longer just the domain of thrifters antiquarians or 90’s obsessed kids. I found rare delights from Chanel, Gucci, Ferragamo, McQueen, Celine: bags, glasses, dresses, sweater, etc, goods – all pristine, all priced far lower than expected. Sure, Crossroads has deals – Out of the Closet has steals – but Pickwick is a true vintage lover’s dream, with better goods and better prices for them than I’ve seen anywhere else. SIGNAL TO NOISE 13 January 2024

Art and fashion: they've been intertwined so long, it's hard to tell which influences what. Must art live only on walls - or can it enliven bodies? At Diane Rosenstein Gallery's "Signal to Noise" show, colorful work by 22 artists, curated by writer Michael Slenske, play on abstraction as described by painter Wassily Kandinsky's as "synesthesia": the subjective sensation of an image. The crowd's sartorial art was equally subjective: Self-as-Art is an art form, too.

What constitutes a best dressed list?
Depends on the outlet, of course.
ICandyLA's criteria, defined by our panel of experts - or expert, I should say - comes down to this:
- PERSONAL STYLE: How unique is someone's look? How much does it relay about them? Fashion, in our view, should communicate personal visual messages. It's one of the ways in a big sprawling city to find, identify, your tribe.
- WHAT SUITS AN INDIVIDUAL PHYSICALLY?: We all tend to make clothing choices based on our bodies, ages, features, coloring, our histories - our financials, of course - our determined color schemes. It doesn't have to flattering, per se - although that factors. It just needs to be - cohesive. A picture, a full story - all these things reflect personal choices.
- IT'S GOT TO BE INTERESTING IN AND OF ITSELF: Outside of how it suits you, what it says about you - does it stand out? Cookie cutter looks are about hiding - which is fine. But having style nerve - fashion balls! - grabs out attention. It makes the world, the city, a much more interesting place. Let's face it: people watching is a very popular sport. LUNA LUNA There's a plethora of theme parks in L.A. - Disneyland. Universal City Walk. Legoland. You could argue the whole city's a Hollywood theme park.
But it's not all for kids/tourists/arrested development types. Finally there's a magical theme park for adults - though 'Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy' would spark childlike wonder in anyone who makes the trek down to Boyle Heights. Luna Luna is pastiche of art treasures, a visual feast - you could liken it to a sunken treasure ship filled with fully restored works created in the late 80's by David Hockney, Sonia Delaunay, Salvador Dali, Jim Whiting, Joseph Beuys, plus New Yorkers Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf. DRESS LIKE PHARRELL
Camouflage goes Damoglage.

“I Candy,” as we call it, is in the “I” of the beholder. So, boy, did my eye – and eyes – get a lot of hard candy at the opening of Louis Vuitton’s Melrose pop up for the first menswear collection by new-ish LV Creative Director Pharrell Williams. The designer/producer/artist/singer applied all his hybrid talents to it: pixilating LV’s famed Damier check in camo colors (“damoflage,” his nickname for it), breaking LV legacy bag The Speedy out of its long time canvas neutrals with real leather rainbow colors. The pop-up is decked out in gold Damier checked floors, the overwhelmingly male crowd was decked out in a variety of LV looks. Celebs like Barry Keoghan and Jaden Smith each wore it in their own way – as did big time influencers, models, movie producers, actors – and LV staff. And there were more LV bags than on any LV women’s runway. “Bags are all unisex now,” laughed one LV employee. “The man bag is dead.”

BEST DRESSED 2023

ICandyLA's sole mission: documenting sartorially splendid Angelenos out and about, anywhere and everywhere - was fabulously fulfilled this year.

But let's face it - some of the fine feathered among us are just more splendiferous than others. Now, why do some dress up when so many in our ultra-casz SoCal camp live in a uniform of t-shirts and jeans, camo shorts, gym clothes, flip flops - ? (LAMoodboard Creative Director Tom Drotar has managed to elevate this somewhat lazy look with fluorescent sneakers).

I say: Why not dress like a rock star - or movie star - or, hell, Hulu star - if you can? With the endless array of vintage and second
hand stores found in every port in the 323, 310, 424, 213 and 818, one can put together a couturial costume on a little more than
a quarter. All it takes is time - and a little imagination. It's not so much about finding that dress or jacket for a particular party - the right dress, the right suit - they ARE the party!! And if you've got an extra few thousand lying around - or can score free celeb couture - you've got zero excuses: in L.A., there's a red carpet round every corner. Every night's an awards show.

After all, Hollywood barflies get dolled up at night more than in almost any other city - because no one dresses before dark. We reside in a city of extremes: sweats and sneaks by day - gowns and tuxes, sequins and studded leather at night.

So dig in and err on the side of Paris Hilton: "The only rule is: don't be boring and dress cute wherever you go. Life's too short to blend in."
