Come into Merle’s Closet for an insider’s view of the inner world of L.A. style.
Fashion: love or fear it, it can own you – or you, it. Sure, you can think of it as vanity, materialism, superficiality, to the max. But to many in the arts, fashion’s just another art form – clothing a means of expression as powerful as any, whether visual, auditory or verbal. You can make art – and you can be art. There’s no “either, or.” In my own many years as a culture journalist, I’ve observed that, while many artists have so-called “uniforms” (Picasso: Breton sweaters and tartan trousers; Gilbert and George, suits; Yayoi Kusama, big dots, Miuccia Prada; big volume skirts and platform pumps), those tend to be just as expressive as someone who labors over every outfit (guilty), even if uniforms vary rarely. Some artists dress for attention; some to deter it (though with Billie Eilish, it’s hard to tell.) There’s little in between.
Some consider dressing their art – myself among them. Strolling the long halls of the tented Barker Hangar for Frieze this past week, there was no lack of eye candy (#icandyla) – and no lack of eyes to take it all in – the art , the artists and the clothes. To me, they were almost inseparable. Oddly – or naturally – many of the hues in the disparate looks – on walls, on backs – reflected each other in terms of tone, texture, pattern, print. Zeitgeist? Or synchronicity? Or happy accident? Are artists naturally stylish without giving it thought? Is it simply a byproduct of career visualists? Or a unique way of seeing the world unique to those tuned into a different (higher?) frequency? One thing we learned: when shown off adjacently in close quarters, art and fashion bounce off each other like light rays – at once, flattering, dissonant and enlightening of each other.

Last night, The Daily Front Row honored the top movers and shakers across design, modeling, media, and more at 2024’s Fashion Media Awards. Atop Rockefeller Center, guests flocked to the red carpet before taking their seats at the sunset ceremony. The chic and hilarious Chloe Fineman (in Thom Browne couture) served as the night’s host, keeping the laughs flowing throughout the night. The guest list included Rihanna, Ashley Graham, Amber Valletta, Alek Wek, Coco Rocha, Carolyn Murphy, Stella Maxwell, Julianne Hough, Deborah Harry, Pat Cleveland, Jane Holzer, Sara Moonves, Sofia Coppola, Josie Canseco, Liza Koshy, Emira D’Spain, Devon Windsor, Nadine Leopold, Georgia Fowler, Larsen Thompson, Ann Dexter Jones, Alex Lundqvist, Rebecca Minkoff, Keke Lindgard, Jessel Taank, Lisa Barlow, Dougie Joseph, Mariah Strongin, Tika, and many more.
As always, The Daily`s Brandusa Niro and Eddie Roche proved great hosts - their best idea being SNL`s adorably chic and very funny Chloe Fineman as host, in a white Thom Browne suit that was as appropriate to this as it would be for the Golden Globes.

iHEART RADIO MUSIC AWARDS
Attending the IHeartRadio Awards (800 radio stations across the country) at The Dolby Theater in Hollywood this week was like a time capsule of rock n` roll looks throughout the last - oh my God, six decades????? Whether it`s punk, hard core, The Birds, Joan Jett or Tom Petty, there was no one present who didn`t get the "dress rock" email to "represent.". Nothing subtle here, with Taylor Swift, Bad
Bunny, Lady Gaga (in a stunning red McQueen gown), SZA all getting awards, among others. We spotted men in Saint Laurent pinstripe suits - combined with aviators and long hair - women in Goth gowns, tiny
mini`s, rainbow hair (literally), and plenty of ice cream suits (orange, red, green) suits on guys and gals.
This is the rock radio crowd`s idea of black tie - going Goth, Britpop, acid jazz or hip hop. Anything goes?
As long as it`s cool - and hot.

Doug Aikten - L.A.`s famously undefinable artist who creates installations, video, photography, sculpture and performance - has not one, but two major exhibits in town right now: Lightscape, at the Marciano Library space, an avant-garde video installation on the American West that`s had live musical accompaniment by L.A. Phil pianists; the next ones to be held Feb 15 and March 5. Aitken`s newer exhibit at Regen Projects, Psychic Debris Field, includes multiple rooms` worth of paintings and sculptures created before the L.A. fires, captures West Coast ecological history and landscape. At its January 18 opening walkthrough, Aitken expressed utter shock and sorrow in the wake of the Palisades and Eaton fires - noting he almost cancelled the opening - then realized this work is even more relevant than ever.

PICKWICK VINTAGE
When L.A.`s confused about the season - this being an particularly odd early spring with shiver-y temps, rain that can`t decide to spout or pour - and earthquakes - what? - denizens of Pickwick vintage always know what to wear: it traverses winter to summer. Fuzzy coat? Check. Tank tops? Check. Eclectric L.A. layering? Check and Check. One thing everyone`s sporting: conspicuous eyewear. Whether for sun, indoors, the nearsighted, reading or just plain old affect, they ride the gamut from dark to gradient to red tints, oversized frames to skinny cat eyes... GIORGIO ARMANI PRE OSCAR PARTY SATURDAY NIGHT
The Giorgio Armani traditional pre-Oscar party, always Saturday nights before Oscars, had its most starry night ever, all packed into the two floors of the Rodeo Drive boutique, almost as packed as the sardine-like crush of pro autograph hounds blocking the tourists from their shopping sprees. Inside, it was pretty easy to see who’d be strutting in GA on the Oscar red carpet the next day: Adrien Brody and Georgina Chapman, Samuel L. Jackson, John Lithgow, Felicity Jones (in a GA spring 2025 floral dress), Anora’s Mark Eydelshteyn, plus other Armani loving VIPs: Walton Goggins, LaKeith Stanfield, Jurnee Smollett, Denis Villeneuve, Henry Golding, Darren Star (in a snug purple GA suit – who knew Armani did purple?), Kristen Bell, Ruth Wilson, Joan Chen – and even some well-dressed others who actually pay for their clothes…

THE ART OF OSCAR | 2025
When the annual Frieze art fair gets to town late February, the town comes alive with the sound of art buzz - even at the apex of awards season. The Hollywood Reporter even gets into the act: the annual Oscar issue, out February 26, features artists` Oscar cover renderings, curated by art writer Michael Slenske, for the second year. Slenske also curated its subsequent gallery show at Laurie Firstenberg`s AF Projects on Sunset. No coincidence it coincided with Frieze`s three day art (and fashion) fest at Santa Monica`s Barker Hangar - both drew the eyes of Angeleno`s always hungry for culture and fashion free for alls. The two go together - like Vermeer and pearls.

FRIEZE ART FAIR
CAPTURE THE CROWD
The 6th annual Frieze art fair always bestows a bit of beauty, a lot of world class cultural flare and much anticipated aesthetic adrenaline on our shores. Opening night always brings out a cool combo of artists, art lovers, celebs, culture vultures - and most of all, people watchers. Never underestimate the art of people watching, an equally aesthetic undertaking all creatives can participate in. At Frieze, no two galleries are alike - no outfits are alike - but couples come complementing each other. Or is it reflecting? Does life imitate art, or the other way around? The most profound question of all: does it even matter?

HERE COMES THE FUZZ
L.A.`s perennial fashion trend: layering - went full frontal at this weekend`s Pickwick Vintage Fair: chill weather vintage coat`s ruled, though most were far from chill. Fuzzy: faux fur, chubby`s, woolly bullies, animal prints: the coat is the thing right now. So are popcorn knits from the 70`s - the fluffier the better. Suede and leather were standouts for sale: leather looks in lipstick red, fluorescent lime, butter yellow - and suede jackets, fringed or plain fun, in every shade of 70`s brown: cigar, burnt umber, chestnut, smoky topaz - and of course, this year`s new/old hue: mocha mousse. How 70`s can you get? Answer: At Pickwick, very.

Players Gonna Play, Play, Play: Taylor Swift’s Game-Day Fashion
By Merle Ginsberg
Some people love sports sweepstakes. But give me fashion sweepstakes anyday. NFL football celebrates strength, agility, speed, grit.
Yet Taylor Swift`s sartorial presence has added another dimension: Kansas City Chief`s games are now non-stop red carpet runway, where we get to see the world`s biggest (richest) pop star dressing up - and dressing down - for her biggest audience of all time. Two hundred million people catch the Super Bowl.
My story in The Hollywood Reporter illustrates how Taylor`s played the game: she`s the Chief`s cheerleader, but she`s also their smartest weapon: wielding her unique combo of sporty spice with high luxe fashion. And everything she touches (wears) turns to cash register gold.

COSTUME PARTY:
Four-time Oscar nominated costume designer Arianne Phillips (A Complete Unknown, Walk the Line, W.E., Once Upon a Time In Hollywood) woke up to her fourth nom on Jan. 23; she`d already scored a BAFTA nom for her work in the Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown. But weeks before this, ASU’s FIDM fashion school then honored her with costume exhibit down at their downtown HQ, with many of Timothee Chalamet, Monica Barbaro and Elle Fanning’s looks right there to touch and feel. “I grew up in the West Village,” Philips, an old pal (and former Madonna stylist), told me. “I grew up with Bob Dylan. What people don’t know is that he actually was a style icon. He never wore shoes – only boots – now true of many guys. After he met The Beatles in 1964, he amped up his game with more mod swagger. I think he influenced Bob generation of male dressing. Timothee had sixty-seven costume changes!

ANGELS IN WEHO????
We know about Angels in America. But till this pre-Thanksgiving sighting, we had no idea angels roam the streets of WeHo. Driving down Santa Monica Boulevard on a chilly Sunday, we spotted a shirtless youth with longish hair strutting, sans shirt – with only giant fluffy white angel wings fluttering from his shoulders for protection. When ask why, he smiled ear to ear: “I think we’re needed more than ever right now.” We can’t argue with that. Then he soared into Bottega Louie for one of their heavenly almond croissants. @visitweho @angelsinweho @angels.in.america @angelsinamerica_teatro
Le Superbe at Church Boutique
What better place to host a holiday season/Christmas/Hannukah shopping party than a boutique named Church? Shopping is a religion at Rodney Burns` and David Mulvaney`s emporium of eclectic eccentric furnishings, art and fashion from far-flung tk. They served vino and chocolate fondue to rabid LeSuperbe shoppers, the L.A. brand designed by this town`s fashion fixture Jeannine Braden. Holiday, the brand`s most coveted season, is famed for its chunky faux furs and sequin bodycon slinks. Among the high profile guests: Bananarama /Shakespeare`s sister singer Siobhan Fahey, the GoGo`s Charlotte Caffey, Michelle Laurita and Thomas Drotar. Oh, and me - all decked out in LeSuperbe celebratory leopard. Me-OW!

PICKWICK VINTAGE AT THE ROW
Downtown Los Angeles
16 November 2024
Sweater weather has finally landed at the Pickwick Vintage Fair. Just give these antique clothes devotees a little drop in degrees - out come the boots, suede jackets, tights, faux furs, leathers, plaids. Layering`s a distinctly L.A. obsession - particularly here, when, given the chance, L.A.`s sartorial stalwarts pile onfringe, feathers and funky footwear. Duly noted: fashionista shoppers like designer Trina Turk, designer/stylist Jeannine Braden and dresser par excellence, Judy Jimenez.
This past Saturday we returned to The Row for the always exciting Pickwick Vintage. This time we concentrated on the Vendors and asked them how they find such treasures. Passionate and dedicated all, there responses did not disappoint. Please find said clips on our website https://lamoodboard.com in the next week

TO view the event in it’s entirety, including the pre-show Capturing the Crowd, please visit LAmoodboard.com where we created a digital multimedia presentation.

Downtown Modernism
Look who WE found at the Downtown Modernism marketplace in Vernon: L.A. stylistas Henry Duarte – the unique denim/leather clothing designer who hails from the L.A. 80’s and dressed every cool rocker around; Church Boutique’s supercool Rodney Burns, who doubles as Lenny Kravitz’s image consultant – and our great friend Jeannine Braden, former retailer, now designer/artistic director of the LeSuperbe line (I donned her leopard shirt), which you can and should purchase on ShopLeSuperbe.com.
