Come into Merle’s Closet for an insider’s view of the inner world of L.A. style.
Art deco is alive and well in L.A., more than in most cities. It manifests most obviously in architecture: The Oviatt Building downtown (with glasswork by Rene Lalique), the Sunset Tower Hotel, the Griffith Observatory, the Catalina Casino, The Wiltern Theater, Los Angeles Public Library, Union Station (build in 1939, a mixture of Art Deco and Mission designs) – and of course, the great original deco Bullock’s Wilshire building – now the site of Southwestern Law School. Member of the Art Deco Society Los Angeles were given a rare treat on March 9, the day before the Oscars: the exquisite 1929 building welcomed the group’s decorated members for a presentation of Art Deco costumes from period films and stage, with a number of period deco designs by Erte’ (Russian born, Paris bred Romain de Tirtoff,) (cont…)

Come into Merle’s Closet for an insider’s view of the inner world of L.A. style.
The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles isn’t just about architecture. Many of its lady and gentlemen members dress up in their vintage finest for various club events. Vintage shoppers by nature, they buy at vintage auctions, private collections – and at this special show’s shop, on the fifth floor of the Bullocks Wilshire building, where wares included piano shawls, beaded evening bags, hats with veils, lace dresses, mens suits and top hats, shoes – and an incredible selection of Art Deco jewelry – at very good prices.
It’s worth joining the group ($40 a year for seniors, $50 for regulars, $75 for couples. Joining means you can attend their annual Deco Ball in Catalina in May. For many, it’s the highlight of their year. Back to the Future is all special effects – a time machine to the past can be magically created with music, lighting, costume and decor.
