The fourth annual Frieze Los Angeles blew into town - more specifically, Santa Monica`s Barker Hangar - on Thursday Feb 29, housing eclectic art work from over 95 international galleries. Born in London in 2003 out of the 1993 British art magazine of the same name, Frieze LA opened on the Paramount Lot in 1999, instantly becoming the cultural/social event of the season. Thursday night`s excitement  had local culture collectors whipped up into an anything-but-chill frenzy, extending their costumes - a word I use to describe these sartorial choices because aesthetics aren`t just an outside job: they start in your gut and work their way out. We spotted lots of walking works of art at Frieze - heating up the big tent into a kind of cultural circus.

Bella Bella Bella! An awards season fete for the video release of “Poor Things” at the Wilshire Ebell showed off the film’s fantasy Victorian goth in an atmosphere bedecked with ‘baby Bellas’: small pale models in long black wigs, puffed sleeves, ruffle tops, wide shorts, boots (a la Emma Stone), dancing against a background of Holly Waddington’s award winning costumes on mannequins. Selfie stylistas in this Insta-influenced crowd created their own wildly inventive would-be Bella’s.

THIS PAST SATURDAY: It’s hard to believe I was a Pickwick Vintage virgin till recently. Busting my Pickwick cherry, I’m already an addict.  The big baby of Big Daddy vintage king Richard Wainwright  is no longer just the domain of thrifters antiquarians or 90’s obsessed kids. I found rare delights from Chanel, Gucci, Ferragamo, McQueen, Celine: bags, glasses, dresses, sweater, etc, goods – all pristine, all priced far lower than expected. Sure, Crossroads has deals – Out of the Closet has steals – but Pickwick is a true vintage lover’s dream, with better goods and better prices for them than I’ve seen anywhere else. SIGNAL TO NOISE 13 January 2024

Art and fashion: they`ve been intertwined so long, it`s hard to tell which influences what. Must art live only on walls - or can it enliven bodies? At Diane Rosenstein Gallery`s "Signal to Noise" show, colorful work by 22 artists, curated by writer Michael Slenske, play on abstraction as described by painter Wassily Kandinsky`s as "synesthesia": the subjective sensation of an image. The crowd`s sartorial art was equally subjective: Self-as-Art is an art form, too.

What constitutes a best dressed list?
Depends on the outlet, of course.
ICandyLA`s criteria, defined by our panel of experts - or expert, I should say - comes down to this:
- PERSONAL STYLE: How unique is someone`s look? How much does it relay about them? Fashion, in our view, should communicate personal visual messages. It`s one of the ways in a big sprawling city to find, identify, your tribe.
- WHAT SUITS AN INDIVIDUAL PHYSICALLY?: We all tend to make clothing choices based on our bodies, ages, features, coloring, our histories - our financials, of course - our determined color schemes. It doesn`t have to flattering, per se - although that factors. It just needs to be - cohesive. A picture, a full story - all these things reflect personal choices.
- IT`S GOT TO BE INTERESTING IN AND OF ITSELF: Outside of how it suits you, what it says about you - does it stand out? Cookie cutter looks are about hiding - which is fine. But having style nerve - fashion balls! - grabs out attention. It makes the world, the city, a much more interesting place. Let`s face it: people watching is a very popular sport.
