The annual Saturday night before the Oscars fashion fete hosted by the Armani brand and Armani heir apparent, his niece Roberta, has become a sartorial pre-Oscar staple. For more than a decade, the soiree’s honored a singular Oscar nom, a celeb friend/wearer of the esteemed Milanese favorite. In the Oscars’ “Age of Armani” – since the designer’s 1990’s American breakthrough to the red carpet and  Hollywood execs – the master has dressed Leo DiCaprio, George Clooney, Richard Gere, Jodie Foster, Annette Bening, Cate Blanchett  – and this year, Zendaya.
I’ve been lucky enough to attend dozens of these fetes over the years: for Glenn Close, Sophia Loren, Cate Blanchett, Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman. This year’s honored one of the most ardent Armani

acolytes – Martin Scorsese. Which means, among the big names: Robert DeNiro, Leo DiCaprio, Jeffrey Wright, Cristophe Waltz, Nic Cage, Willem Dafoe, Lily Gladstone, Rege-Jean Page – were Armani loyal customers, friends of the house, journalists – and a diversely dressed crowd that all had this in common: long or short hems, jeans or trousers, leather or lace – they’re understated, chic – Armani effortless.
