Come into Merle’s Closet for an insider’s view of the inner world of L.A. style.
There are beaucoup de conversations at the monthly Pickwick Vintage Show at The Row DTLA: its 70 plus vendors and their loyal flocks don’t do costume party. They do them – splendiferously. Singularly. I used to think vintage chicks, vintage chic, were camp – even kitsch. Shopping Pickwick a couple times, I now see them – us – as full-fledged epicureans.
NAME: Amanda Suter
HER STORY: “It’s my hair,” insists Amanda of her striking white bubblecut, who reminds of Stockard Channing’s Rizzo in “Grease.” “You should have seen it before – it was down to here,” she says, pointing to her hip. Clearly she likes to play hair Houdini: “Before that, I shaved my head for three years.” A punk thing? – we inquired. “No,” she remarked flatly. Her white 1950’s cardi from Pickwick, jeans from Frederick’s of Hollywood (yes, that Frederick’s).
