EVENT THREE

WOLK MORAIS 11th COLLECTION PREMIERED

GRANDMASTER RECORDERS RESTAURANT / 1518 CAHUENGA BLVD. LOS ANGELES / 6 NOVEMBER

WHERE/WHAT: WOLK MORAIS

NAME: Drew Cockrell

OCCUPATION: Stylist Extraordinaire

SUM OF THE PARTS: “These vintage Louis Vuitton glasses are from 2012, got them from a vintage dealer. The necklace is also vintage, it’s Lanvin – I bought it on Beverly Blvd in Burbank. Reyvon bought this jacket for me from Wasteland for a music video – it’s Burberry. Pants are vintage. Belt is Escada.’ (which does not make menswear) “It was worn by Gaga. Now I own it. Bag is Prada, shoes: Escada.

STYLE PHILOSOPHY: “My philosophy is mix and match. Eclectic flamboyance.”

NUGGETS of i-CANDY:

Why does Drew remind me so much of a new romantic Oscar Wilde? That’s a gigantic compliment, by the way. He has nothing to declare but his fabulousness. If you don’t see it, you’re blind or boring. Or both.

i-CANDY RATING: Drew’s a bestseller. Not an author. He knows how to sell it. A look, I mean.

WHERE/WHAT: WOLK MORAIS

NAME: Randi Molofsky

OCCUPATION: Vintage clothing collector and owner of the LA/NY jewelry showroom “For Future Reference”

SUM OF THE PARTS: “I’m almost always in vintage, but tonight I wanted to wear something Wolk Morais – I wanted it to do a lot of texture mixed with some fitted things and some oversized thing. I love this flared Wolk Morais sequin skirt and bustier – it’s two pieces. The jacket brings it down from all the texture. The shoes are Chanel. The jewelry is a mix of vintage pieces and some by my clients.”

STYLE PHILOSOPHY: “For me, it’s a mixture of texture and patterns. Whether that’s the handbag, the accessories, there has to be a mix somewhere. I don’t like anything one note – that’s my main thing. And this: if I’m going to a fashion event, my look starts with the clothes. If I’m going to a jewelry event, it starts with the jewelry. It always starts with the event.”

NUGGETS of I CANDY: Randi is one of L.A.s true OG fashionistas: meaning, she has very own iconic style. This lady doesn’t just have an eye. She has x-ray specs. And she wisely leaves the hair and makeup pretty understated, so as not to compete with the rest of her look.

i-CANDY RATING: For one of the most stylish women in Los Angeles – if not the world – Randi has earned a crate of Vosges Haut Chocolat – the U.S. originated fine luxury chocolate brand.

WHERE/WHAT: WOLK MORAIS

NAME: Megan Duffy

OCCUPATION:“Actress and music video director. Tyler, the cinematographer on the Wolk Morais film, is a good friend.”

SUM OF THE PARTS: “I’m wearing a vintage gown that I picked up in New York eight years ago. I think it’s a 1990’s piece. It looks very 1940’s, I think. So do my shoes. But they’re Jessica Simpson! Gucci necklace and shoes.”

STYLE PHILOSOPHY: “Tyler said the fashion film they made paid homage to the 1940’s, so I wanted to conjure that. Just to be on theme. Most of the time, I like to mix modern and vintage. I love that store What Goes Around Comes Around. That’s my fashion fusion.”

NUGGETS OF CANDY: Megan, Ms. Teacup, knows herself/her own vibe well. She’s the perfect retro channeler. I love when people identify with a different time and own it. I utterly relate to that.

i-CANDY RATING: TEN NESTLE’S CRUNCH BARS: Ten Dots Gum Drops – from the 1940’s. Relevant, right?

WHERE/WHAT: WOLK MORAIS

NAME: Rey Von Miller

OCCUPATION:Singer

SUM OF THE PARTS: A beaded two-piece black pajama with silver studs look by the brand pronounced “God” –its name is spelled GCDs. Somethin’ a little Wolk Morais inspired – my friend’s coming in a while with a Wolk jacket so I can change – do a double take! I just love WM’s suiting – to be honest, I wasn’t a huge suit wearer till I met Wolk Morais. Honest. They turned me! They’re so good, their suits make me feel good and confident. The glittery shoes are Louboutin” (tk,  famous style).

STYLE PHILOSOPHY: “My style is connected to my music. I want my image and how I look to represent my music and the vibe that I put off, to make me feel comfortable to perform. If I throw on something good – okay, I’m ready now. It’s an extension of the music. And you have to have fun too! It depends on your mood – I’m kind of a mood dresser. But you can even make sweats look cute – it’s all about the vibe you’re. As Rupaul says, “We’re all born naked and the rest is drag.”

i-CANDY RATING: Ten peppermint Lifesavers – to go with those shiny studs.

WHERE/WHAT: WOLK MORAIS

NAME: Maryam Malakpour

OCCUPATION: Creative director and super stylist; a longtime client is Keith Richard.

SUM OF THE PARTS:Kickass dark magenta print herringbone Wolk Morais suit, with unique cropped flared pants: The studded bag is vintage Thomas Wylde by Paula Thomas. “It’s good protection, too.” Long earrings are vintage Saint Laurent. Shoes are Celine. (the Hedi Slimane Celine)

STYLE PHILOSOPHY:

“Am I a suit girl? I didn’t used to be. But Brian (Wolk) and Claude (Morais) are friends, so I get to wear their amazing suits. Good thing I’m sample size! I often find myself thinking, ‘What about that dress?’ Then I say – nah! So I’m gonna own it. I’m now a suit girl. If it’s Wolk Morais. Whatever they tell me to wear, I’ll wear. My ultimate fashion philosophy is: classic. With a rock n’ roll twist. I can’t deny it. Even if I try to go different!’

NUGGETS OF CANDY: Maryam is being extremely modest. Not only is she one of the coolest girls in L.A., she’s one its best dressed. Always. She’s the first person I ever saw wearing Balenciaga jeans.

i-CANDY RATING: Ten sharp edged Christmas cookies – because they are so well and carefully cut – with a sprinkle – a twinkle – of sugary stuff.

WHERE/WHAT: WOLK MORAIS

NAME:Alex Lee-Aillón

OCCUPATION: Fashion model, content creator, unofficial book club leader, nutritional science and dietetics student (at an accredited university…obviously!) , mother of Chiweenies, and fluent in Spanish and sarcasm.

SUM OF THE PARTS: I was dressed by the creative force, Claude Morais and Brian Wolk in head to (almost) toe Wolk Morais. I completed the look with a pair of stunning silver heels from Amara London. Claude originally wanted me to wear this gorgeous short black dress but I’ve noticed that as the weather has gotten colder and more gloomy, I tend to wear more muted or dark colors. That being said, I opted for this electric and vibrant hot pink set which gave me the pop of color I desired. I felt like a doll in this look!

STYLE PHILOSOPHY: Fashion should be playful, laid-back, and above all- impeccable. Definitely mix it up and strive for that effortless “I’m trying but I’m not trying too hard” look.

i-CANDY RATING: Jaw dropping/sexy. She gets 25 jawbreakers in bright colors of course.

WHERE/WHAT: WOLK MORAIS

NAME: Carlton DeWoody

OCCUPATION:Artist and design director

SUM OF THE PARTS: “The glasses, I think they’re called Shady Spex, they’re cheap. So chic for twenty five bucks. The fuzzy yellow sweater is by Beans. Aether tan desert boots. This thin wool shirt is by a British company – I think James Bond wears these shirts.”

STYLE PHILOSOPHY: It’s mix and match, break the rules: I’m wearing a black belt and blue navy pants. There’s this Italian term – ‘Sprezzatura’ – it means ‘effortless.’ Clothes should always look effortless.

i-CANDY RATING: No candy for Carlton – he deserves ten bottles of Italian sparking water, like Pellegrino,  which is clear, clean – but effervescent.

WHERE/WHAT: WOLK MORAIS

NAME: Laura Dromerick

OCCUPATION: “Actor, creature performer” (I think this means she plays creatures in fantasy and horror projects? Whatever. It’s Cosplay to the max.)

SUM OF THE PARTS: “It’s a jumpsuit, I got it from Nordstrom for a wedding cause I didn’t want to wear a dress. Now I’m obsessed with it, I wear it all the time. My bag I got at a vintage sale. My necklace is from Arson, a queer jewelry line. Everything else is from Melrose Trading Post.”

STYLE PHILOSOPHY: “I’m mostly vintage. It’s retro, vintage. I love travelling through time.”

NUGGETS OF CANDY: Lauren’s a tall drink of water, she can wear anything. But something about her definitely conveys another time.

i-CANDY RATING: Those little wax bottle with colored sweet liquid inside. I think they’re from the 50’s or 60’s, you might see them in those “old-timey” candy stores. But otherwise, stuck in the past – they ain’t comin’ back. Neither are your teeth, if you devoured them.

WHERE/WHAT: WOLK MORAIS

NAME: Glynis Costin/Art Streiber

OCCUPATION: (Glynis)Magazine editor at W/WWD, In Style, now independent talent booking consultant at Costin Consulting. (Art) Photographer extraordinaire of celebs for editorial, advertising, television and movie posters

SUM OF THE PARTS: I got this gold sequin skirt about ten years ago. Tonight is the first time I’ve ever worn it.  Studded Diane Von Furstenberg bag.  Black men’s blazer – I think it’s Theory – Art (my husband) got this necklace at  Malibu’s Crosscreek.  Shoes – I think are Michael Kors. I normally never wear high heels!”

STYLE PHILOSOPHY: “I go to my closet, I mix and match and see whatever I have. There are things I forget I have. Shopping in my closet. I don’t buy new clothes very often anymore.”

NUGGETS OF ICANDY: Glynis has worked at so many major fashion publications – W, Women’s Wear Daily, Los Angeles Magazine, In Style for many years – that even when she’s not trying, it’s just in her blood. Second nature.

i-CANDY RATING: Ten packs of mixed nuts – cause she’s absolutely no nonsense practical.

WHERE/WHAT: WOLK MORAIS

NAME: Kevin Roldan

OCCUPATION:Influencer, fashionista, Instagram wizard

SUM OF THE PARTS: “This is an asymmetrical high slit black dress that exposes a little bit of bosom – but it covers what needs to be covered. My white stilettos are from a designer you might know – AmaZONE! Accent on the second syllable. Nails by Nina on Melrose.

STYLE PHILOSOPHY: “It’s all about self-expression. You don’t have to ask permission for anything! from anyone.”

NUGGEST OF CANDY: Kevin Roldan’s like a walking posing bolt of lightning. A living incarnation of a rave.

I CANDY RATING: The hell with candy. Give this shining star a crate of Crystalle and a case of caviar.

WHERE/WHAT: WOLK MORAIS

NAME: Julia Clancey

OCCUPATION:Fashion designer, lover of life.

SUM OF THE PARTS:“This electric blue number’s actually a jumpsuit, one of my own designs. These tassel earrings are attached to the turban (her design) but you can remove them.  This crazy necklace: this was part of something bigger, it was by Christian Dior, looks like a little camera bag – but it holds your lipstick. I bought this bag in Spain. Good story about these pink suede Zara boots: many many years ago, I saw them on a friend. I said, ‘I have to have them!’ She said – ‘give up. You won’t find them.’ Not long after, I walked into a Zara – and there they were. I called to them. They came to me.”

STYLE PHILOSOPHY:“You know, life is SO short. Therefore everything you do should be about joy. I love dancing, movement. I design for that, and that’s how I dress. It’s fun when you go out and feel excited about what you’re wearing. It’s about celebration.”

NUGGETS OF CANDY:Julia is a turban and kaftan designing/wearing Mae West – she wears the party, she brings the party wherever she goes. It’s not just an attitude – it comes from her core. Glitter, fringe, tassels, gold, lame, color – she emanates it all.

i-CANDY RATING: Boxes and boxes of M & M peanuts in every color of the rainbow. Sweetness, light, bright – but a very strong core.

WHERE/WHAT: WOLK MORAIS

NAME: Tyler Curtis

OCCUPATION:  Still Photographer/ DP/ Artist. Cinematographer for the RECTO/VERSO – 11th Collection of Wolk Morais Short Film

SHOOTING THE FILM “Brian, Claude, Kat and I had a lot of discussions about what we wanted to accomplish in the influences that we shared- but the concept was completely Wolk-Morais- from there it became a true collaboration. I was drawn to Run Lola Run, Brazil and In the Mood for Love as reference films for camera tracking and movement within confined spaces- but also as films that really made the location a character. With Western Costume, it’s impossible not to be overwhelmed while also inspired by its presence. For the runway shots, we knew we’d have to move quickly- both backwards and forwards and had to be extremely mobile as we shot during working hours- so we chose to put a Sony A7SII on a handheld Ronin which I manned and while my AC ran behind me with a handheld LED tube. This kept our footprint tiny and gave the models all the room we could muster.  In between filming the models, we shifted from motion to one of three strobe setups for the corresponding lookbook. All in all we did about a week’s work in two long and productive days. I’m beyond grateful to the team, Kat’s incredible edit and Brian and Claude for trusting we could get it all done!

WHERE/WHAT: WOLK MORAIS

NAME: Rey Von Miller/Drew Cockrell (See earlier entries for both Rey and Drew from this event.)

WHERE/WHAT: WOLK MORAIS

NAME: Carlton DeWoody/Brian Wolk

OCCUPATION: Brian Wolk, one of half of the Wolk Morais womenswear and menswear design team. (Carlton bio please find earlier.)

SUM OF THE PARTS:Both members of the longtime work/life team always (wisely) dress in their own designs. Brian is particularly partial to sharp tailoring, often, flowy oversized suits and pieces.

STYLE PHILOSOPHY:Wolk Morais! The best fabrics, skilled cuts, subtle colors, killer textures.

NUGGETS OF CANDY:Wolk Morais suits, coats, jackets, with their natty cloth and shapes, simply make everyone look better – what’s better than that?

i-CANDY RATING: These guys are a gourmet meal, soup to nuts. Hold the candy.

WHERE/WHAT: WOLK MORAIS

NAME: Fran Roberts

OCCUPATION: “I’m a photographer and a creative director. I started in entertainment, was a model.”

SUM OF THE PARTS: “This blue shaggy coat is so warm and fuzzy. This is the first time I’m wearing it. It was made by a Swedish woman, a friend of mine who just sends me things. Pants are vintage Bebe from the 80’s – Bebe gets cooler as it gets older. Really. The earrings are from a thrift store.”

STYLE PHILOSOPHY: “I really like texture. I don’t mind wearing all black or all white, but I need varied textures. Layers.. I like jackets, scarves. Without all that, I feel naked.”

NUGGETS OF ICANDY: Tall and stately with fabulous auburn hair, Fran could wear literally anything. But instead of literally anything, she paired a crystal sky blue shaggy coat with auburn hair. That takes an eye.

i-CANDY RATING: A fluffy cloud of azure cotton candy (food coloring: not a flavor.)
