Doug Aikten – L.A.’s famously undefinable artist who creates installations, video, photography, sculpture and performance – has not one, but two major exhibits in town right now: Lightscape, at the Marciano Library space, an avant-garde video installation on the American West that’s had live musical accompaniment by L.A. Phil pianists; the next ones to be held Feb 15 and March 5. Aitken’s newer exhibit at Regen Projects, Psychic Debris Field, includes multiple rooms’ worth of paintings and sculptures created before the L.A. fires, captures West Coast ecological history and landscape. At its January 18 opening walkthrough, Aitken expressed utter shock and sorrow in the wake of the Palisades and Eaton fires – noting he almost cancelled the opening – then realized this work is even more relevant than ever.
