SUMMER PICKS: BEST PLACE FOR CINEPHILE'S

Just how iconic is The Big Lebowski, the 1998 Coen Brothers’  ode to L.A. stoner slackers? When it opened this summer’s Cinespia Memorial Day weekend, the 24 year old outdoor movie confab at Hollywood Forever cemetery – a kind of mini Coachella for four thousand picnicking partiers  – many idiosyncratic cineastes came on-theme: bathrobes and slippers as Jeff Bridges’ The Dude, Viking goddesses (Julianne Moore), bowling bad boy Jesus  (John Turturro) – there were even red devil onesies (Peter Stormare’s Satan).

It might be twenty seven years old, but Lebowski – the character and the movie – are comedic Angeleno archetypes still alive for some – slackers, stoners (we could smell it) – or not. Founded in 2001 by one John Wyatt, who started his own film club for he and his friends – which grew to a hundred people – after which they’d head to a restaurant. (CONT…)

When the owners of Hollywood Forever Cemetery got interested, it was a no-brainer. Dinner and a movie: a classic combo. But when they’re out on a manicured lawn at the same time – irresistible. A side show features djs, a photo booth, and well manicured grave sites with Hollywood history” Judy Garland, John Huston, Douglas Fairbanks, Joan Hackett, Jayne Mansfield. “There’s nothing more exciting than watching a big crowd be drawn together by what’s on the screen,” says Wyatt, and he’s right: lots to look at, all around you. Some people hawl chairs, blankets, flights of wines and mega boxes of sushi. The crowd, the eats – almost as creative as what’s on screen. Later this summer, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (imagine all those Brad Pitt buff bodies), Clueless, Showgirls and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
